Governor Morehead School Newsletter for May 2021

Dear Governor Morehead School Community,

A Happy Mother’s Day to all moms on May 9th.  Monday, May 10th is an “optional workday” for staff. There will be no in-person or remote classes on this day, as well as on Memorial Day, May 31st, as we honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives in the military.

Spring is the season of new beginnings as new life begins to take root and blossom on campus.  Our flowers are in full bloom in the gardens, trees are full of leaves again, and the sounds of busy birds fill the air.  With the return of our students to campus, a renewed energy is buzzing around campus. Our classrooms, cottages, and dining halls are busy with students learning, playing, and laughing again. Each week we are thankful for the safe return of students and staff.  After the long hiatus of student activity on campus, this renewed energy reminds us how thankful we are to have our students back on campus.

On May 3rd- May 7th, we celebrate and thank our incredible staff during Staff Appreciation Week.  Please join us in thanking GMS staff for all they do to ensure our students continue to be nurtured, continue to innovate, be challenged, and be empowered. Our staff works extremely hard to ensure students are learning, engaged, safe, and healthy so they can continue to learn and grow even during these most unprecedented times. GMS staff is a group of uniquely talented, caring, big-hearted, dependable individuals that work so effectively as a team to provide the best educational opportunities we can provide for our students. Thank you, GMS staff!

Attached to this newsletter is next year’s 2021-2022 school calendar recently approved by the State Board of Education. Registration day will be August 2021 followed by the first day of classes on August 16th. Our last day for the 2021-2022 school year and graduation will be on June 3.  Please review carefully and let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to another great school year!

We are gearing up for the summer program. This year’s summer program themes are “Extreme Science and Sports Galore”! These themed weeks start June 21 and run until July 2nd for students across the state.  Our first week of the summer program will focus on areas of academic need while providing fun and engaging opportunities for students to continue their learning from this past year starting June 14 for GMS students only.  Registration for summer programs is now closed.

We thank all families, students, and staff for maintaining all our safety protocols including wearing a mask, socially distancing, and washing hands frequently.
